Where to start with Men's skin care

Few days back, I asked my followers on Instagram ( which are mostly men) to ask questions regarding help they need with skincare or beauty and I’ll make dedicated posts for Men. Many asked for the basics of Skincare for Men, daily routine, what products to choose, etc. So here are few tips on where to start with Men’s Skincare.

*Disclaimer: I’m not an expert in this field and its all based on research and observation. I wouldn’t  suggest you to blindly follow anything I say. Here are just the basics, for bigger concerns, consult a Doctor. Images used are of unknown sources taken from google*

1. Understanding your Skin:

Most men never thing about what they put on their skin. The first step of skincare is understanding your skin and choosing products accordingly. Know your skin type, know your skin problems, try to understand the underlying cause of the problem, visit a dermatologist if necessary. Once you know what your skin requires, you can treat it better.

2. Cleansing:

Cleansing is the most basic and important step of skincare. There are so many face washes coming into the market dedicated to men. Try washing your face twice a day. Avoid soap as it is quite harsh for face. It’s not necessary to use only men’s products, use what suits and works for your skin.

If you have dry skin, go for cream based cleansers which contain moisturizing ingredients and cleanse your skin without stripping it of it’s natural oils. Suggestion: https://amzn.to/2OmQsNY

If you have oily skin, use products which claim to be oil removing face washes. Suggestion: https://amzn.to/2uWO1cO (personal favorite, I myself use this daily even though its for men)

3. Moisturizing:

Moisturizing is a step most people (including women) skip upon. It’s a misconception that only dry skin should use moisturizer, oily skin requires moisturization too. If you have extremely dry skin use products rich with oils. Suggestion: https://amzn.to/2mOJt3N

If you have oily skin, choose hydrating moisturizers, such as, https://amzn.to/2LyBhU4 or my all time fav, aloe vera gel

4. Exfoliation:

Exfoliating or scrubbing removes the dead skin from your skin’s surface, leaving it soft, smoother and refreshed. Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week but don’t over do it as it may damage your skin. If you have sensitive skin, use a mild scrub. Scrubbing also helps you get rid of dry patches from the skin, white heands and blackheads. Some good scrubs are: Seer Secrets Almond scrub (for dry skin), Himalaya neem scrub ( for oily skin)

5. Masking:

Masking is something men skip on quite often. Masking is a quite essential step and must be done once or twice a week. If you have oily skin, go for clay based masks and if you have dry skin, go for gel based masks. Suggestion: Plum Chamomile and White Tea Glow Getter Face Mask, Plum Green Tea Clear Face Mask

6. Sunscreen:

Sunscreen is something no one should ever skip! Even when sun isn’t out. Sun protection is quite necessary and it’s the underlying cause of most skin problems like pigmentation, dark spots and sun burns. You must always leave your house with sunscreen on! I’d suggest: Neutrogena Sunscreen

7. BB/ CC creams:

BB or CC creams are tinted moisturizers. They provide moisturization and also even out your skin tone. If you feel using this makes you feel feminine then I feel sorry for you! but if you want even toned and flawless looking skin, you should definitely try using this before heading out to work. Try using creams which have spf in it for extra protection. Suggestions: Ponds BB cream, Garnier BB cream, Maybelline BB cream

With these, I have few minor tip I need to add:

  • Use a body wash and a body moisturizer everyday
  • Change your razors frequently and keep them sterile and hygienic.
  • Use an after shave after shaving.
  • Drink lots of water
  • Eat Healthy

Hope you found this useful, I tried my best at explaining. Do let me know what works for you and your skin.

Thank you so much for making it to the end. Lots of Love. xoxo- Bareen.
